A little help?

I'm trying to form up my miniatures into cohorts but I'm having a little trouble deciding how many I should have per cohort. I've looked at various wargaming sources and they seem to give two different numbers...16 and 24. What do you all do? Could you help me out and let me know which number is best? I play using WAB rules if that has any influence.

I vacillated between 16 and 24, before settling on the latter, because it looks more like a unit, and enables me to position the command stand in the centre.

You can do both; if you paint 3x24s, say, and a couple of extra command stands, you could field 5x16s (assuming that you use the same shield design).

If you are Wabbing... people often seem to use units 15 or 20 strong, deployed 5 abreast. Although not personally a Wabbite, I have bought (and rebased) quite a number of units based for WAB.

Thanks! I originally bought to allow for 24 models per unit but I've seen a lot of 16 model units so I got a little confused!

I have 3 x24 men I think so I could always change I guess.

Actually, some WAB players swear by multiples of 3, to allow for a 3-wide marching column which, if the troops are drilled, can turn and become a three-rank deep formation. That translates into numbers such as 15, 18, 21, or 24.

Looks like things are coming on great guns!

I would create cohorts of 24 men, you can always leave some out if the game demands it.

My 2000pt armies are made up of three cohorts of twenty four men, a couple of Auxiliary units and a single unit of cavalry. Alanicus and I tend to cheat a little when costing up the armies, we don't include the generals in the points. This gives us more men on the field and looks better. I do have a couple of units of 16 but I use these as skirmishers.
